Abortion Restrictions Maryland
The following abortion restrictions Maryland went into effect as of January 1, 2017:
- The parent of a minor (under 18 years of age) must be notified before an abortion is provided.
Maryland requires that one of your parents be told of your decision before your abortion, unless you do not live with either parent and a reasonable effort to give notice is unsuccessful. A doctor can excuse you from this requirement. Maryland law requires abortion providers to notify a parent or adult family member if a woman age 17 or younger seeks an abortion.
The adult family member does not have to give permission for the minor to have an abortion, but an adult family member must be notified. Girls under the age of 18 must get written permission from a parent or guardian before being allowed an abortion.
Metropolitan Family Planning Institute is committed to making this process as smooth as possible for minors seeking abortions.
