Mifepristone. FDA-Approved.
What Is Mifepristone?
Mifepristone is one of two FDA-approved medications most commonly used for medication abortion in the United States. Approved by the FDA in 2000, mifepristone works safely and effectively to end an early pregnancy—typically up to 10 weeks gestation. It’s used in combination with another medication, misoprostol, to complete the process.
At MFPC, we offer medication abortion with mifepristone under the guidance of experienced and compassionate medical providers. Whether you’re coming from Rockville, D.C., or Northern Virginia, we’re here to answer every question you might have.
How Does Mifepristone Work?
Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary to maintain pregnancy. Without progesterone, the uterine lining breaks down, and the pregnancy cannot continue. You’ll take this first pill in our clinic, followed by misoprostol at home 24–48 hours later. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Together, these two steps are over 95% effective, and mifepristone is the key to initiating them.
Is Mifepristone Safe?
Yes. Decades of research and clinical use show that mifepristone is safe and effective when taken as directed. It’s approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and backed by leading health organizations, such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Common side effects include mild cramping, bleeding, and nausea, but most people recover fully within a few days. At MFPC, we provide detailed guidance and 24/7 support to help you through the process.
Why Is Mifepristone in the News?
You may have heard debates about the legal status of mifepristone. Despite challenges, mifepristone remains legal and available in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia. Anti-abortion lawsuits have attempted to restrict access, but multiple courts, the FDA, and medical experts continue to affirm the safety and necessity of this medication.
At MFPC, we want patients to know: You are still protected. We continue to offer mifepristone as part of your care with full legal backing.
Do I Need an Appointment to Get It?
Yes. To receive a medication abortion with mifepristone, you’ll need to schedule an appointment. We’ll confirm your current stage of development, review your health history, and provide step-by-step instructions. If you’re eligible, you’ll take mifepristone at our clinic, then go home with misoprostol and aftercare support.
