Learning more about medical abortion

Metropolitan Family Planning Clinic makes learning more about medical abortion convenient.

Medical abortion is an option for women who have conceived a child but are not willing to carry the pregnancy to term. This type of abortion has the same emotional effects as a standard abortion and the same level of support should be provided throughout the process.

What is Medical Abortion?

Medical abortion is also called (RU-486) and the process begins when a woman ingests the abortion pill. This is an early option solution that can be performed as early as 9 weeks of gestational age. Although there are some unwanted side effects with this option, the success rate is between 92% and 95%,

What to expect from the process

On the day of the abortion, you will receive a pill which is 200 mg of Mifepristone to be ingested. Following this, 24 to 48 hours later, you will then take 800 mcg of Misoprostol which is taken under the tongue at home for 20 to 30 minutes. There are some side effects from medical abortion which include nausea, cramping and bleeding, fever, vomiting, chills, dizziness, and diarrhea.

Follow Up Care

In 2 to 5 days, it is important to return to the clinic to get follow up care as well as a sonogram. The final sonogram and contraceptive counseling will take place 2 weeks later. Pain relievers are provided for patients and non-steroidal medication can also be purchased for home use.

After the sonogram and final visit, the process is completed. You can begin returning to normal activities within a few days of having a medical abortion.
